Farewell White Man

Ken Fairweather

Ken Fairweather is a successful businessman in Papua New Guinea and was an influential politician. He arrived in Papua New Guinea in 1970 at a young age. It was a formative time for him, and he took with open arms the opportunities that presented themselves.

Always optimistic, he says at the end of his book that he looks forward to the future. He is, and always will be, a larrikin to the end.

“And so it is farewell to the whitemen I knew in Papua New Guinea. We were part of building a nation, but our time of the entrepreneur is gone. There will always be some white people coming as employees or visitors, but they will not leave a legacy. There is no place for them.”

Ken Fairweather’s story is a tale of passionate entrepreneurship, astounding development, colourful politics, and deals – always deals. You know you’re in for a gritty yarn when he starts with, “There’s a funny story about….”.

Bullets, Bombs and Buffalo Bulls

Colin Knox

These stories by Colin Knox come from his teenage years in the Moonie District in Queensland, from Vietnam where he fought in one of the major battles during the 1967–1968 Tet Offensive, and from his time catching buffalo in the Northern Territory for fifteen years as part of the eradication campaign. Later, he cut timber sleepers for the railway in Queensland. He worked in three of the most dangerous jobs, and had a number of near-death experiences. He is probably best described as a bit of Buffalo Bill, GI Joe and Crocodile Dundee, all in one package. Colin caught and shot pigs, foxes, buffalo, brumbies and kangaroos for a living at various times in his life. Colin wanted to get these stories into print before they were lost forever.

A Nurse Like Aunty Mavis

Denise Petersen

From when she was four years old, the author wanted to be “a nurse like Aunty Mavis”. Her Aunty Mavis told her amazing and funny stories of nursing adventures and travels on great ocean liners to see wonderful places, different cultures and art works throughout the world.

Born in a small country hospital in the grain-belt farming area of South Australia, Denise Petersen struggled in her education, but nothing would stop her from emulating the nursing career and adventurous travels of her much-loved aunt.

As a Midwife and Registered Nurse, Denise cared for people in far-off countries, found romance in Papua New Guinea and sailed yachts on vast oceans. She eventually settled in Cairns in tropical North Queensland, Australia, with her husband and two children. At Cairns Base Hospital she further enhanced her nursing career of over fifty years and discovered her passion of caring for children with cancer and their families.

This book is engaging, humorous and insightful. Denise’s journey exemplifies … the true spirit of the Nurse and Midwife – high standards of practice, kindness and compassion, cultural respect, flexibility and, importantly, a sense of humour. Jenny Sando RN, PhD
